GUWAHATI: As the counting of votes started in the morning, so did the speculations regarding the winners. It all finally came to an end in the evening of December 8 when the winners of all the constituencies were declared.

The results of the legislative election in the state of Gujarat turned out to be just as many leaders of the ruling party predicted. It made a clean sweep of a huge majority with 149 seats. Congress was unable to make any major effect as they managed to win 16 seats and secure the berth of the opposition in the West Indian state.

Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Admi Party did manage to surprise everyone in this year's Gujarat election as they won 5 seats. Although the tough competition was expected between BJP and Congress, very few people actually believed that AAP will be able to win seats in Modi's home state. Another unexpected player, the Samajwadi Party also won a seat in Gujarat along with 3 independents.

Results from the counting in Himachal Pradesh were the exact opposite of that in Gujarat. Congress claimed a huge majority in the state with 40 seats, while the previously ruling Bharatiya Janata Party managed only 24 seats. Also, three seats were claimed by independent candidates in the hill state. No other party managed to leave any mark in this state.

Voters of Himachal Pradesh proved most of the predictions wrong by bringing back the INC to power and thus keeping their trend of reversing the government and opposition every five years still alive. Most political experts had mentioned that the Jai Ram Thakur regime will continue to be in power.

The win in Himachal Pradesh will definitely encourage the INC to put up a tougher fight in the upcoming elections in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura while BJP and their coalition partners will try to retain their grip. Bifurcation demands in Nagaland are expected to play a major role in the state elections.

Note: The figures are based on the numbers on the website of the Election Commission of India at the time of writing this report.
